When I started with goal setting and reverse engineering the goals to accomplish them, I would move to scheduling the tasks in calendar as step 5.
Not any more.
Because I know that there is something critical that must be done before I set about really doing things.
And that is, setting up environment for success.
It is even more critical for maintaining momentum for long term goals.
There are four things you need for this:
- Motivation: intrinsic (internal) or extrinsic (external), whatever works for you. If you wish to delve deeper, here is a piece I wrote on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
- Supportive community: colleagues, friends, family or online communities, whichever is relevant. They help you keep motivated and keep the larger goal in mind.
- Minimal distractions: This is the flip side of motivation, but worth a separate mention. This distraction could be your internal imposter syndrome or external naysayers. Keep both at arm’s length.
- Skills: This is the only tangible thing in this list, but very crucial. If you lack the skills necessary for finishing the tasks that take you towards accomplishing the goals, you will find it 10x more difficult. Either learn the skills or have access to people you can outsource the work to, when the need arises.
