Last week, for Diwali, my daughter and I were tackling the simple task of tidying her room.
I was eager to show her “how it’s done,”
I directed every step, thinking it was the best way for her to learn how it is done.
But before long, frustration took over. For both of us.
So, I took a step back and asked, “How would you like to go about it?”
Rather than telling me, she showed how she would like to do it.
She had a slower but more creative way of tidying up. In a way that systematically cleared way for the next activity she was scheduled for.
I simply nodded and watched. And soon enough, she was working away confidently.
Watching her, I realized something: my urge to control was more about my own impatience. My need to get thing done quickly rather than her “need” for direction.
What she really needed was suggestions, not instructions.
Parenting has this way of teaching us to let go at times.
It reminds us that we don’t need to have it all figured out; we just need to give our kids the space to find their own way.
They show us that life isn’t about perfection but about learning together, one moment at a time.
