With the world crumbling around us, or so it seems, does it even make sense to try and be productive, manage your time well and keep adding to our superlist?
For those of you who do not know what is a superlist, a brief recap. Superlist is a list of tasks that must be completed by you, irrespective of whether it is a personal task or a professional task. As I have often repeated, if you try to keep your personal and professional tasks separate, it is just not possible to do justice to either of them.
With work from home or hybrid work a reality for most of us these days, it makes even more sense to treat personal and professional tasks at par.
As I was wondering at the beginning, does it even make sense to keep adding to the superlist or trying to be productive and well organised?
Yes, it does make sense to do that.
Not with me on this one?
I don’t blame you. Couple of weeks ago I myself was in a dark place where everything seemed meaningless.
But I managed to find meaning despite the sadness all around, and I want you to do the same.
Just spare me a few minutes, that’s all I want.
The pandemic is raging around us, at least for those of us who are in India. But life does not stop. Even for those of us who have lost loved ones, life cannot stop because fortunately or unfortunately that’s the way God has made us. We might rave and rant and wail and fret, but eventually we have to continue with our lives.
I know it is very difficult to pick up our lives again but that is something that must be done. And let me tell you, when you have systems in place and you just need to start following them again without giving it a thought, it is easier to fall back into the rhythm. The pain and grief will not go away if we do not start getting back into our normal life. Wallowing in grief and self-pity “sounds” and “feels” good, but doesn’t serve for long.
Just a week ago, as I lay in my isolation room, and my younger daughter hung around the door telling me that she was also showing symptoms, for a moment the world seemed to end. Here I was not even able to take care of my own needs, how would I care for her when she needed her mother the most. Thankfully, we all came out of it but at that point of time everything seemed so futile and meaningless.
As news of family members falling sick comes through, prayers get more and more fervent. And that’s pretty much we can do for them, such is the nature of this pandemic.
Except may be trying to keep as much semblance of order in our lives as possible.
We owe it to the family around us, especially children and the elderly.
We owe it to our employers and clients, who are relying on us to keep their lives in order.
We owe it to our country, which needs to get back on track financially as soon as possible.
We owe it to our compatriots, who are in a much worse situation than us but still fighting hard.
And above all, we owe it to the doctors, nurses, scientists, ambulance drivers, cleaning staff, and innumerous other frontline warriors who are putting their life on line every moment.
I have promised myself to stop pitying myself and get on with business. What about you?
Share your struggles with others and you will find support and strength to cope. Remember, we still teach our children that man is a social animal, and we would do well to remember it.
